salute: February 16th…Aretha Franklin

If there was a sound to represent the faith, the fight and the pains of of the civil rights movement, Aretha was that blast. In the early years of the fight for civil rights Aretha was the symbol of African American progress. She revolutionized Gospel Music by merging the sacred songs of the church with mainstream radio. With that she was seen as a vessel of truth and hope. She continuously lent her vocal talents in support of Dr. Martin Luther King.  Her innate pride, grace and talent made her the perfect candidate represent the advancement of black women in the 1960’s. If her presence wasn’t enough to represent the change, her music did… once her hit RESPECT hit airwaves in 1967 there was no doubt that both African Americans and Women (as Patti LaBelle so nicely put it) had “A New Attitude.”
